The three sons of Daniel and Catherine Alty, of 45 Wigan Road, signed up for the war. 

Thomas Alty was married and lived in Southport.  He joined the Tank Corps as a gunner.  He died on 23rd November 1917, aged 32.

His younger brother Daniel joined The King's Liverpool Regiment and as 2nd Lieutenant was attached to the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment when he was killed (aged 31) on 5th September 1918. 

The family then requested that the yet younger brother, Henry, should be excused duty and return to Westhead.  The request was apparently granted, but Henry, who had already been decorated for valour with the Distinguished Conduct Medal, as unfortunately killed on 30th September 1918, aged 24.
